Susanna Moore: ‘Beauty, especially in women, has always been seen as a potentially dangerous gift’

When I first arrived in Hollywood aged 21, I was taken to lunch by a movie director who told me that I reminded him of Grace Kelly, even though I was a brunette. He suggested that I put myself in his hands, as he was sure that he could make me a star. When I showed no interest in his offer, he said: “But we can still be special friends, can’t we?” Although he chose not to recognise me the next time that I saw him, he can’t have been too offended.
