Born in 1952, she was a student during the Cultural Revolution, and in its aftermath worked as a barefoot doctor, a steelworker and electrician. In 1978 she moved to London, and became the first person from the People’s Republic of China to be awarded a PhD from a British university. Her books remain banned in Mainland China.
